April 8, 2012 Georgetown

Wednesday April 18, 2012

We moved closer to Lake Victoria.  Nice spot.  Beautiful day!  Boat is all cleaned up and laundry done.  Pam and Rod from s/v Moon Shadow offered to help us out with the propane and garbage so the guys went into town to do those manly things.  I even grabbed a quick hot shower this morning since I knew we would have access to water now.  Water here is free, by the way, although it has to be carried back to the boat n 5 gallon jugs by our dinghy since only small boats can enter Lake Victoria through a very narrow canal.  Things on the boat are back to normal.  Later on Pam and Rod picked us up and gave us a tow to Minn’s water sports where the motor would be delivered.  We knew the mail boat was in so thought it would be easier to just bring the boat in there so they can just put it on the dink at the shop.
Fred had his fair share of spills today.  As we were walking down the street from Minn’s this morning I noticed he wasn’t next to me.  He had fallen and I caught him getting up a few feet behind me.  I quickly ran to him to make sure he was okay and asked what happened.  He said he wasn’t looking where he was going and fell.  Scared me.  Since he is diabetic his sugar can become low and he does feel dizzy, but he assured me this was not the case.  Then as we were walking to the laundry mat he and Rod were in front of Pam and I and I saw Fred drop and roll.  Again, I dropped what I had right on the side of the road and helped him up.  This time he said, “Okay Patti, you can laugh now”  But I didn’t.  I was pretty convinced it was his sugar but he insisted he just tripped and fell.  He did do a good job of falling in the street and onto the sandy roadside.  I was impressed.  Looked like a professional football stunt to me.  Then I laughed.  So did he.  He is okay, just one of those falling days.  I have them too.
We did laundry and grabbed a huge burger at Bikini Bottoms and walked back to Minn’s.  The outboard is still in Nassau.  They simply forgot to put it on the mail boat.  Simple as that!  Hey, we are in the islands and what better place to be “stuck”.  No problem.  It also missed getting on the boat leaving Nassau today because that boat too has left Nassau and will be here tomorrow. So the only alternative is to put it on the “Fast Ferry”, whatever that is and it “should” be here Sunday.  If it doesn’t make that boat, there are no more boats coming in from Nassau all next week because of the “Family Regatta”.  It’s okay.  I can get some basket weaving done, read and just breath, which I do believe is the one thing I forget to do in the US.  One thing for sure, tomorrow we will most likely stock up on some groceries to last us a week since there is no mail boat coming in.  We are pretty set  though.
We discovered we are right next to the path going into Lake Victoria and may move again, just to get out of the wakes.  It’s not uncomfortable but I imagine this next week it will be.  s/v Moon Shadow said they may move further in if they can find a spot.  They have a 6 foot draft and it is harder for them to get closer.
It has been a great day.  I overheard something today that I had never noticed.  The people at the next table were pointing out to their friends who had just flown in to look at the clouds over the water.  They said the green cast under the clouds was the reflection from the water below.  I had to look for myself and they were right.  There was a greenish cast under them. It was something to see.  Although I didn’t jump at the chance to grab a picture of it because I was eating lunch, I will take notice now of all the clouds to see if I can get a shot of that pretty hue on the underside of the clouds.  Now this is something I never knew about, a sight to see.  I feel like a child relearning the meaning of God’s beauty.
