February 5, 2012 Rum Cay

Sunday February 5, 2012

And I thought I was ready to leave.  Nope.  I just have a hard time staying still so I decided to keep myself busy this morning and scrub the salt off the deck.  I know...boat decks are salty, it’s kind of like dirt bikes and dirt, boats and salt.  The thing with that is salty gets on our feet and then below and on the cushions and sheets, then everything is sticky.  I also know that tomorrow we are leaving on this long trip and it will just salt up again.  I am not sure why I did it.  Either to have something to do or because the deck was dirty.  Either way it’s clean...for one night.  I scrubbed it with sea water and soft scrub.  Darn stuff works good on a boat.  I still wonder why they don’t sell Soft Scrub in marine stores.  The plan was to give it a quick hose down before while we topped off with water but by the time they turned the water on, the soft scrub was caked on the deck.  In between swabbing the decks and the super bowl, I managed to cook up a big pot of chili to take to the clubhouse.  Although there are only 4 boats here, two in the marina and two swinging on a hook, we all brought something to share.  While making the chili I realized how nice it was to use canned beans and Ro-tel and tomatoes.  My storage was getting roomier and the boat was getting lighter.  Fred said that may just give us an extra knot tomorrow while on the high seas.  I questioned that, was he talking about the beans or the weight?  I have so much storage in my kitchen at home and really never thought about that, until today.  Another blessing.  Actually, I am glad we are cramming food in little nooks and crannies.  This means we still have food and won’t starve.
While I was busy doing little nothings, Fred was busy with the new tt (tender to) Casa Mare’.  I woke up this morning and the first thing I did was open the companionway and look out.  There she was, looking like an old lady with sagging skin on her port side.  ‘Darn’ I thought.  “It leaks too!”  I woke Fred up and he got busy finding the problem.  It was the cap on the valve.  He had it fixed in no time and was once again, doing the dinghy dance which would be pumping one leg then change to the other to fill her up.  He’s got that rhythm down pretty good now.  I watched him and thought, I hope this will be the last dink dance for a long time.  So far, so good!  He hooked the engine up to the davits steadied her as I pulled her up from one boat, Fred steadying it just in case I lost grip of the lines and slowly repositioned it to the new dinghy.  In due time he had everything moved from one dink to the other.  Now she sits, detached from Casa Mare’ and reattached to her new home, the dock.  She has seen her day!  I will miss the great times she showed us.  She did bring a few laughs.  Fred pulled the rope and I could tell he wanted to take her for a quick spin.  He asked me if we had a bottle of champagne to christen her but I came up with my camera instead.  He is pretty happy with his new toy!
Needing to get off the boat for a bit, I went to the club house and called Mom and Dad on the internet.  Something about my calls to them just make my heart warm and fuzzy.  They are always so happy to hear from me.  No telling when we will get internet again, probably Turks and Caicos.
Tonight we watched the Super Bowl and we both are beat.
Tomorrow we will be leaving about 10 in the morning.  There will be 3 boats, s/v EOS, s/v “Chaunteeler”  and s/v Casa Mare’.  I am hoping to track the trip with SPOT.
This has been a good stop.  Probably the quietest Island we have come to but I truly believe in a year or two it will be better that it was before hurricane Irene hit them.  We plan to stop here at Rum Cay on our way back and it is then, I plan to snorkel.  My leg is healing but not there yet.  I would say 4 more layers of skin to go.  We have been blessed with a new dinghy on this stop.  God is good, God is everywhere!  I am humbled.
