January 27, 2012 Calabash

Coffee on, hatches and ports closed, snubber off, anchor aweigh and a northward heading gave us plenty of beautiful sailing weather, not much wind but a smooth ride.  As Thompson Bay slowly drifted into the distance, we sat and enjoyed our morning chat over a few cups of coffee.  It was too pretty to sit in the cockpit so went up to the bow and sprawled out on deck, taking the beautiful Wing and Wing sails cupping every inch of wind it could to blow us forward.  It was spectacular.  I wondered what I have ever done in my life to deserve such a blissful moment as I gazed into the heavens and talked to God.  Even though we weren’t leaving Long Island, our plan was to move to the Northern end  of the island to give us a better vantage point to head on for Rum Cay with s/v “EOS”.  Five hours later we found ourselves dropping the hook on Calabash, one of the most beautiful anchorages one would ever see in the world.  That’s what the books say anyway and I am here to tell you, the books understate it’s bottom.  Fred and I were so tired, about 1:00 pm we both collapsed after put things thing’s back in their places and we both fell asleep until 7:30 pm.  We ended up watching 2 movies.  Tomorrow we are headed to Rum Cay.  This gets better and better the further South we go!
A quick rundown on the trimarand.  We found out three people who were it were picked up by a cruise ship and never hit the water.  We don’t know why they abandoned ship or how long it had been drifting.  In one day the trimarand was completely stripped of everything but the hull, the mast and the railings.  That’s what they do here and it is legal.  Even those police who were investigating were hauling things off.  We heard later the stuff taken from it were for sale by calling this number.  Although we could have used a single side band receiver and a dinghy, I wouldn’t touch that with a 10 foot pole.  I guess the people were flown back to Guadeloupe where they were from so we will probably never hear the whole story.   Fred and I discussed what we would absolutely need if we had to abandon ship like that with a cruise ship picking us up.  We decided passports, ID’s meds and I would have to grab the SPOT because it is not mine, it’s my brothers and I promised I would take care of it and return it when we got back.  I think you are supposed to stay with the vessel unless it is sinking, which that trimarand was not.  I would stay unless we were sinking and if we had to jump into the dink, that foot pump would have to be #1 on the list.
