March 14, 2012 Luperon

Wednesday March 14, 2010

We spent the day in Luperon chilling.  Rod fit right in and I think he really enjoys it here.  Although he is limited in reaching further destinations with his healing hip, he has no problem going to the important places like Capt. Steve’s and JR’s.  Cathy, a local gringo, Evlynne, Ebay, Annie’s sister, and I took a girls trip oout to town in search of a dog collar and leash and all the fixins you need for an adopted dog, which Cathy did right there that day.  We were all sitting at Steve’s having lunch, and the local dog without a name suddenly became “Baby”.  Cathy’s husband is out of town and she decided to adopt her.  Any dog here with a collar is owned, the others are adoptable.  There are not animal shelters here.  Off we went to the feed shop where they sell stuff for any like of animal here on the island.  We had fun picking out a pink collar and leash, food, fleas and tick shampoo and of course worming meds.  Now she had a new owner and let me tell you, a nicer place to live than the streets.  She just pranced along with us, happy to know she was finally “one of the girls”.  It was fun.  Later on after dinner we came back in town to played Trivia Pursuit at JR’s...lost of course but it was close and fun!  It’s just a game and we made sure to keep it non serious.  If we did win, we would have had the privileged of putting our team name on the “Golden Coconut” which we decided should be “The Coco-Nuts”.  As we left, it was drizzling, but we actually thought we could make it back to Casa Mare with “No Problem”.  Wrong!  Just as anything else connected with sailing, nothing is as expected.  By the time we got halfway down the government dock road to the dinghy dock, it was pouring so loud we couldn’t hear ourselves talk.  This was the hardest rain I have seen here.  We finally made into the dink, knowing what we had ahead of us.  It was dark.  Very dark.  So dark that flashlight only lit up the wall of falling water at the bow on the dinghy.  We had two flashlights, huddled up on the cooler top and hoped there was nothing in front of us to collide with.  Fred was driving blind as Rod shouted out commands, “left” “right” “straight” “slow” “wait” and I am still not sure how we found the boat, but instinct brought us there.  The only thing missing on the dink was a bar of soap because there was not a dry spot on any of us.  Even out clothes would have come out clean with a power rinse.  (Note...by Thursday night our clothes, hanging outside, were still wet”.  No showers needed that night!  Rod kept it light and very funny.  Always be grateful for clean water from heaven and a great driving rain scrub!  The wind was driving force but it didn’t help with drying us off as in a car wash.  It was fun!  Another adventure.  This is what happens when I miss a day or two of posting...I forget things but that was part of the day anyway...fill in the blanks here Rod!
